Drinking liquor is
condemned in the śāstras as a mahāpātaka . One who associates with such people
is also decried as one who has committed the mahāpātaka. A brāhmaṇa who drinks
so shall be born as insects, moths, birds and beasts.

surāpaśca steyī ca gurutalpagaḥ !
ete sarva pṛthagjñeyā mahā
pātakino narāḥ !!
