A Purana has five key characteristics known as Pancalakshana. It deals with the following aspects in greater depth:-

•        Sarga  - Creation
•      Pratisarga - Re-creation after dissolution
•      Vamsa  - Genealogy
•       Manvantara – Duration of  the Manus 
•       Vamsanucarita – Dynasties of Kings and Rishis
